Artist’s Statement
My life’s journey-as-artist has been a matter of bearing witness to an indwelling beauty and love that has continuously sought and found outward expression through me. With this thought I am reminded of the words spoken by Almustafa in “The Prophet” written by Kahlil Gibran: “Was it I who spoke? Was I not also a listener?”

My studies of how color, shape, pattern, and form impact human consciousness have been a guiding light in this exploration. Giving birth to forms and images that have proven to be stimulating, uplifting, expanding, inspiring, educative, and inducing reflection and contemplation in others is part of my mission.
The life of some artists involves a dedication to recording immaterial events (inner experiences of the mind, heart, soul, or spirit) through material means. This journey is a process often void of a knowable destination, yet always imbued with a sense of arriving.
The ever yearning of the formless to take form requires a surrendering and yielding to the inspirations that arise within me. Over the course of these past forty-two years I have grown to respect and appreciate the responsibility for this birth-giving in ways that have deepened and widened my spirit, and hopefully, the spirit(s) of others. From this place of service I stand in gratitude seeing this life’s work as a love offering to those choosing to receive. And, to the many responses of appreciation from others I have answered with these words: “Your response to this work is my greatest reward!”

A Mandala Drawing workshop invitation

An Introductory Workshop with Vandorn

Mandala is the Sanskrit word for circle. Historically, Mandalas have served humankind as symbolic reminders of universal order, as a meditation process and for the attainment of various degrees of self and cosmic integration. It has been used as a therapeutic technique for centering one’s attention/self. The Geometry of Life, also known in some circles as Sacred Geometry, is an ancient system of observation of various levels of order within the universe. These teachings embody the Golden/Divine Proportion (Golden Mean), Dynamic Symmetry, Fibonacci numbers/spiral, etc. The Geometry of Life can help to facilitate the exploration of the Mandala as a self-integrating, centering exercise and window to discovery.

This workshop leads one through an introduction to an ancient system of exercises using the compass, the ruler (straight edge), and colored pencils and pens. With this equipment one may generate drawings that furnish a working definition of balance, order, beauty, harmony, the fractal, and dynamic and radial symmetry. Each drawing is constructed from the foundation of two arbitrary points on a worksheet. These points are used to develop a variety of compositions (ranging from simple to complex) made entirely of circles and straight lines.

Participants will have an opportunity to explore Mandalas based upon 6-ness, 8-ness, 10-ness or 12-ness. These drawings will furnish significant points of departure for the exploration of Mandalas with personal symbols or more universal signatures.
